Primary Purpose of Position

The Department of Biology at North Carolina A&T State University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the field of Molecular Biology, starting in August 2018. The appointment at the assistant professor rank. In particular the Department is seeking qualified candidates who can develop a collaborative and innovative research program in one of following areas: molecular biology, genetics, or cell biology. The program should align with the Department and the College’s interests in the field of biology.

The hired faculty is expected to show commitment to teaching and advisement excellence. She/he is expected to: teach biology courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, develop courses and curricula, direct students in research, and provide service to the University and community. Individuals with experience in inquiry-based teaching, student-centered learning, and able to engage students in an investigative laboratory exercises are particularly encouraged to apply.

The ideal candidate will develop and maintain a vigorous research program in either molecular biology, genetics, or cell biology, secure extramural funding, and direct the research activities of MS and PhD students in one of the above mentioned areas.

Mentoring undergraduate research students is also expected as biology majors in the department follow a curriculum designed to provide ample opportunity for research experience. A candidate whose teaching and research efforts will promote the mission of the Biology Department and the strategic vision of the College of Science and Technology as well as the University is highly desired. Service to the Department, the College and the University is also a requirement of the position. The selected faculty will have the ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculties/colleagues in the sciences, math, and technology areas.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is an 1890 land-grant doctoral research university dedicated to learning, discovery, and community engagement. The College of Science and Technology is research oriented and fosters academic excellence through innovative programs, critical thinking, and intellectual inquiry to prepare students for the 21st century global workforce. The College plays a pivotal role in further advancing the mission of the University by emphasizing preeminence in STEM and promoting curricular advancement, scientific discovery, and technological innovation. The College houses the departments of Applied Engineering Technology, Biology, Built Environment, Chemistry, Computer Systems Technology, Energy and Environmental Systems, Graphic Design Technology, Mathematics, and Physics.

The Department of Biology has more than four hundred (450) enrolled undergraduate and over 25 enrolled master’s students. Biology is housed in Barnes Hall, and currently has 14 tenured or tenure-track faculty members. The Department of Biology’s mission is to educate students to become competent, competitive, and confident leaders who excel in global scientific community. Among its core values, the department is committed to excellence, responsiveness, accountability, intellectual growth, inclusiveness, and collaborative engagement. Additionally, the department provides instruction in the biological sciences through classroom and laboratory interactions, undergraduate research experiences, seminars, and professional career advisement programs and activities.

Minimum Requirements

The candidate must an earned doctorate (PHD) in a biological field such as, but not limited to molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, and teaching experience in biology at the college/university level.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

1) Postdoctoral research experience in a biological field with experience in genomics, bioinformatics, analysis of big data in the biological science.
2) Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching, advising, and research.
3) Demonstrated ability to establish an externally funded research program that will involve undergraduates.
4) A research and pedagogy plan that can attract funding from various granting agencies
5) Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with other faculty and colleagues in the sciences, math, and technology areas.
